"정치경험이 전무한 보수당 윤석열 후보는 성평등 부처 폐지를 약속했다."

 

"보수정당 윤석열 후보가1퍼센트 미만의 격차로 당선되었다. 정치 및 외교정책 경험이 전무한 검찰총장 출신인 그는, 성평등 정책 전담 부처의 폐지, 진보정당 출신 문재인 전임 정부의 수사, 그리고 중국과 북한에 대해 훨씬 적대적인 태도를 취할 것을 공약하였다."

The winner, by a margin of less than a single percentage point, was the conservative candidate Yoon Suk-yeol. A former top prosecutor with no political or foreign policy experience, he has promised to abolish South Korea’s ministry for gender equality, investigate the outgoing progressive leader, Moon Jae-in, and take a much more combative stance against China and North Korea. 

 

"한국은 여성이 남성에 비해 거의 1/3 정도 낮은 수준의 임금을 받고 있는, OECD 국가 중 가장 높은 성별임금격차의 국가이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 새 대통령은 급성장하고 있는 ‘남성의 권리’와 ‘안티 페미니즘’ 운동의 지지를 선거 캠페인 기간 동안 구축해 나갔다."

Despite having the largest gender pay gap of any country in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development – with women earning almost a third less than their male counterparts – the new president cultivated support from South Korea’s burgeoning “men’s rights” and “anti-feminist” movement during the campaign.

 

“한국은 아시아에서 가장 먼저 미투운동이 벌어졌던 국가 중 하나로, 최근 들어 페미사이드와 여성에 대한 폭력 의제에 관심이 증가하였습니다.” 조지 워싱턴 대학 한국학 연구소의 박사후 연구원 Darcie Draudt은 이렇게 말한다. “또한 남성들이 호텔방이나 공중 화장실에서 옷을 벗은 상태의 여성들을 카메라로 몰래 촬영하고 그 촬영물을 여성들의 동의 없이 온라인에 배포하는 행위인, 소위 “몰카”현상이 있었지요. 즉, 이러한 의제들은 현재 여성들이 정말 주목하고 있는 핵심 이슈이다. 그럼에도 윤 당선인은 ‘남성권리’운동을 동원하고, 그들의 관심을 끌기 위해 노력했습니다.”

“South Korea had one of the first #MeToo movements in Asia, and there has been increased attention on the issue of femicide and violence against women in recent years,” Darcie Draudt, a postdoctoral fellow at George Washington University’s Institute for Korean Studies, told me. “We have also seen what is known as the ‘molka’ phenomenon, where men take photos using secret cameras of women in hotel rooms and public restrooms in various states of undress and post them online without their consent, so these issues are really at the forefront of many women’s minds these days. But instead, Yoon mobilised the ‘men’s rights’ movement and played to their concerns.”

 

"지난 5년 동안 서울의 아파트 가격이 거의 2배 오르는 등 주거비가 치솟고, 2021년 기준 청년 실업률이 거의 9퍼센트에 도달하였다. 하지만 Draudt는 성평등 개선을 위한 노력이 남성에게 불이익을 주었다고 생각하는 경제적인 분노와 불평이 안티 페미니즘 운동을 더욱 부채질하였다고 말한다. “이는 내가 경제적으로 뒤쳐져 있다고 생각하는 감정에서부터 출발합니다.” 그는 설명합니다. “취업시장은 매우 경쟁이 심하고, 남성들은 18개월의 병역의무를 이행해야 합니다. 여성들은 이 의무를 지고 있지 않죠, 그래서 그들은 여성들에 비해 취업이 늦어진다고 불평합니다. 그러나 이는 매우 근시안적인 관점입니다. 왜냐하면, 결국 장기적으로 보면 그들이 (경제적으로) 더욱 성공하기 때문입니다.”"

With housing costs soaring – apartment prices in Seoul have almost doubled in the past five years – and youth unemployment reaching 9 per cent in 2021, Draudt said the anti-feminist movement was fuelled by economic grievances and complaints that efforts to improve gender equality were unfairly disadvantaging men. “It all stems from a feeling of being left behind economically,” she explained. “The job market is really hot and competitive, and men have to complete 18 months of military service, which women don’t do, so they complain that they enter the workforce later than their female peers. But it’s a very short-sighted view, because in the long term they are probably going to get ahead.”
